The answer to how the Slinky was invented is: gravity did it. In 1943, naval engineer Richard James was developing springs that could stabilize sensitive shipboard instruments against the pitch and roll of the sea. One day, he knocked a torsion spring off a shelf — and instead of clattering to a stop, it stepped. Shelf to stack of books, books to tabletop, tabletop to floor, end over end, like it had somewhere to be.

James took it home and told his wife Betty he thought there might be a toy in it. She reportedly spent two days with a dictionary hunting for a name and landed on a Swedish-rooted word meaning sleek and sinuous: slinky.
Ninety minutes at Gimbels
After two years refining the steel and the coil, the Jameses borrowed money to manufacture 400 units and talked Gimbels department store in Philadelphia into a demonstration in November 1945. Richard set up an inclined plane, sent a Slinky walking, and all 400 sold in about ninety minutes. The couple founded James Industries, and the Slinky went on to sell hundreds of millions of units.
The physics that make it walk
A Slinky walks because it keeps transferring energy along its own coils — each step is the spring’s momentum flipping its mass over its leading end, a controlled fall that regenerates itself as long as the steps keep coming. Physics classrooms still use Slinkys to demonstrate wave propagation, and one of the great physics-video staples is a Slinky dropped from height: the bottom hangs impossibly still until the collapsing top reaches it.
The part most people miss
The strangest chapter isn’t the invention — it’s what came after. Richard James walked away from the company in 1960, and Betty James took over, moved production back to Hollidaysburg, Pennsylvania, and ran Slinky for nearly four decades. She’s the reason the toy stayed cheap enough for every kid: she resisted price increases for years on principle, and in 2001 was inducted into the Toy Industry Hall of Fame.
