Everyone who’s crossed a dark living room barefoot knows the question from the wrong side: why are LEGO bricks so strong? The answer starts with a patent filed in Billund, Denmark on January 28, 1958 — the stud-and-tube coupling system that defines the modern brick. The studs on top grip the hollow tubes underneath a mating brick, creating what LEGO calls “clutch power”: friction engineered precisely enough to hold a model together, yet release to a child’s fingers.

Precision measured in microns
Clutch power only works if every brick is nearly identical. LEGO molds bricks to tolerances in the range of a few thousandths of a millimeter — tighter than many automotive parts. That’s why a brick made this year clicks perfectly onto one from 1958: the geometry hasn’t changed, and the manufacturing has only gotten more exact. The company reports that only a tiny fraction of elements per million fail quality testing.
The plastic is the other half
Since 1963, standard bricks have been molded from ABS — acrylonitrile butadiene styrene — a plastic chosen for rigidity, scratch resistance, and dimensional stability. ABS doesn’t flex much before it fails, which is exactly what stud-and-tube coupling needs. It’s also why the brick wins the fight with your foot: compression tests have shown a standard 2×2 brick withstands forces in the neighborhood of 4,000 newtons — roughly the weight of a small car pressing on that single brick — before it deforms.
Your bodyweight on one heel doesn’t come close. The brick doesn’t yield, so your nervous system does.
The part most people miss
The 1958 patent’s real genius was backwards compatibility as a business decision. Godtfred Kirk Christiansen chose a coupling geometry that could anchor a “system of play” — every future set extending every past one. Six decades later, the system has produced a fun statistic: six standard 2×4 bricks can combine in more than 900 million ways, a number LEGO’s own mathematicians helped compute.
