Your discs are mostly water
Each disc has a tough outer ring surrounding a gel core that’s largely water. All day, gravity and muscle activity squeeze fluid out of the discs, and they flatten slightly — each disc by a fraction of a millimeter, but you have a lot of discs. By evening, the accumulated compression subtracts roughly 1 to 2 centimeters from your standing height.

And the shrink isn’t fully reversible across a lifetime — decades of disc-water cycling plus gradual disc thinning explain a portion of why people lose height with age. You are, in the most literal hydraulic sense, a structure that needs nightly re-inflation.
